HOste Hainse's Roadmap to sustainability

The Levels

Hoste Hainse's ultimate goal for the communities that we serve is to provide them with the resources they need in order to operate and flourish sustainably. This means that down the line, Hoste Hainse plans to leave its schools and income generation projects in the hands of the community so that the people of Sarlahi can run their villages independently.

There are four levels to our roadmap. Starting from Level 1: Basic Necessities, Level 2: Expansion, Level 3: Social Support, to Level 4: Community Development. To read more about them scroll over our school on the right!

Our Level 1 Projects

Libraries

Libraries for Every School

$11,000 (USD)

Right now, our schools operate a ‘mini-library’ at our Dhangada School as well as a nearly-complete, full library at our Sahodwa School. Taking what we have learned from the ‘mini-library’s’ implementation, we now wish to complete the Sahodwa School Library and establish similar projects at the rest of our schools. With the Sarlahi literacy rate sitting below 50%, the creation of these community hubs of reading and writing is critical to improving our students’ futures. Through our interactive libraries, we hope to improve English & Nepali literacy rates, provide a safe place for students to learn after school, and empower our students with the education they deserve.

Bathrooms

Construct New Bathrooms

Student Lunches

Currently, two of our four schools do not have properly functioning bathrooms. One of these schools, the Dhangada School, has an existing bathroom that, with time and misuse, has fallen into disrepair. The first step of our long-term fundraising project, Triple-H, seeks to repair this facility. That being said, our Padariya School currently operates with no wash facility, meaning the construction of one will be necessary. This is especially detrimental to our female students, who cannot come to school while they are on their periods as they have nowhere to take care of their health needs. Through this project, we hope to provide our students with the basic human rights, privacy, and dignity that come with proper wash facilities.

Water

Provide Clean Water

$8,000 (USD)

A significant challenge our students face is the lack of clean water access at our schools. From a privileged position, we may assume that these students are “used to” drinking dirty water, but any drinking water with unsafe levels of contaminants can ultimately lead to severe health issues. In addition to inaccessible clean water, we also lack adequate water pumps for the total number of students. Children in these schools experience sweltering high temperatures and heat waves with no air conditioned classrooms to cool off in. This accompanied with inadequate water pumps is a prominent issue our children face everyday.  Our goal is to provide our schools with water pumps while also trying to achieve a basic need of having enough water. Access to water will allow students to be comfortable in Sarlahi weather conditions, while also giving them the experience of a cleaner and more sanitary learning environment.

Provide Student Lunches

$63,000 (USD)

Children at our schools are often not provided with a lunch. Right now, we rely on government funding in order to provide our students with lunch every day. However, funding is very unreliable, and students go to school unknowing if they will receive a warm meal. In Sarlahi, food security is low, meaning that our students may skip meals or eat smaller portions in order for their families to afford other necessities, putting their health at risk. Providing lunches at school alleviates financial strain on families, which gives parents an incentive to send their kids to school, increasing our students’ attendance. With this project, donated money will go towards building kitchens in our schools, hiring a local parent to cook the meals, and buying food. Our goal is for all students to be provided with lunch every day they attend school and ensure they are well-nourished for continuing their classes.

Menstrual Health

Support for Menstrual Health

vectorized rickshaw icon red.png

$10,000 (USD)

Previously, we had distributed single-use pads at three of our schools for our students to use. However, unexpected barriers that kept our female students from fully taking advantage of this resource became evident shortly after implementation. With girls being our most disadvantaged students due to the risk of child marriage, pregnancy, and death, we are revisiting this project to provide the best support we can. Without adequate access to menstrual health resources, our girls are forced to stay at home on their periods and miss up to a week of school, further putting them behind their male peers. Our goal is to provide comprehensive support, including access to menstrual hygiene products, clean bathrooms in conjunction with our Triple-H initiative, and female education classes to improve menstrual health knowledge and help break down the stigma surrounding periods. Ultimately, we hope to empower our girls with the knowledge and resources they need to be confident and independent individuals

Electricity and Wifi

Provide Electricity and Wifi

At the present moment, three out of our four schools are supplied with electricity while only one has any access to wifi. Supplying our fourth school with electricity requires us to construct and install the infrastructure to bring electricity to the village-- a costly endeavor. But, combined with wifi, these additions can bring our schools into the technological era, bridging the digital divide between our students and those in the country’s urban areas. Providing teachers with access to the internet will be revolutionary for our students’ education, as well for communication within our organization.

Computer Labs

Build Computer Labs

rickshaw icon green vectorize.png

$100,000 (USD)

Previously, our Dhangada school ran computer literacy classes for our students on 4 old desktops. Despite the unsatisfactory setup, the classes were extremely successful and beloved by our students. Due to general wear and tear, our computers are now defunct and the classes have stopped. We have developed plans for a fully furnished computer lab, fit to hold an entire class, but without fundings, plans are only plans. We seek to close the digital divide that holds our students back from higher-paying jobs in Nepal’s urban centers, giving them far more employable, technical skills, better information access, and a generally higher quality of education.
